Reading at Nightingale
At Nightingale, we are passionate about children developing a love of reading. From the moment children arrive in our nursery, we provide them with opportunities to interact with stories, poems, plays and non-fiction. Our curriculum is centred around a 'core text' which is linked to the class topic. We find that this approach helps the children to fully engage with the story and the characters.
We expect all children to read each night and encourage families to continue to read stories to their children.
We are always trying to find new ways to engage children and encourage them to read more. With this in mind, we have recently joined a growing number of schools who are using Accelerated Reader as a tool to encourage children to read widely and to demonstrate their understanding of the books they have read.
All children in years 4, 5 and 6 have completed a baseline assessment which will provide them with a reading age. It is not uncommon that your reading age may differ from your actual age. This then enables your child to select books which are appropriate for them to read. These books will have the right level of difficulty so they will challenge your child and help them to make progress. Once your child has finished their book, they are able to access a range of quizzes on the Accelerated Reader site. These quizzes will test their comprehension, literacy and vocabulary skills. We are then able to gather this information to help track the progress your child is making.
Each child has their own unique login and password.

We have also set up an online reading blog, where children will write their own book reviews as well as recording podcasts and audiobooks. This is organised through an after school club run by Mrs Witham and Mr Wicks. Click the link below to visit the blog.
